Is Calm Therapy for me?

When choosing a therapist, there are many things to consider, before you sit down and start doing ‘the work’ on the issue at hand. It’s a personal thing really, to find the right person for you, to build a positive, engaging and real therapeutic alliance, so you can begin to create change in your life.

Below, to make it easier for you, is a summary of commonly asked questions as to why Calm Therapy might just be for you.

What can my Calm Therapy session address?

Your therapist is fully trained to handle most problems listed below where you feel ‘stuck’. That overwhelming feeling that you feel when you have no control over the issue/situation and you are struggling with your thoughts, feelings and behaviour as a result.

Now this can present itself in experiences of

  • Anxiety/ Social & Performance Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Low Self-Esteem Issues
  • Addictions & Dependencies (Self-Soothing Behaviours)
  • Obsessive and Compulsive Behaviours
  • Anger Management
  • Procrastination
  • Insomnia
  • PTSD

The aim of our session together is to find out what you are DOING that contributes to being ‘stuck’ and show you how to do it differently. It is ultimately about connecting you with resources you have already in a non-problem area of your life and show you HOW you can apply these in the problem space. As well as giving you the required skills if you don’t already have them, to not do the problem.

Will I have to talk about the problem over and over?

Although we love talking, your sessions will not be about traditional Talk Therapy. We don’t want to waste your time and money talking in too much length about the reasons why the problem started. Yes, we will touch on this at your first session, but proceeding sessions will be how do we make your experience different. It’s what we do now that counts.

What is the Calm Therapy Approach?

This type of therapy is active, strategic as it is a form of short-term/brief therapy. Sessions are usually 6-8 weeks in length with these being regular weekly sessions. These can be conducted face to face in our private studio in Bilpin NSW or via private Zoom sessions. Whatever the format, your therapist will discuss with you your specific needs and the treatment plan suggested at your first session.

Your ongoing sessions will involve not only strategic assessment of how you do what you do, but also primarily aims to educate you on how to do it differently. We give you the necessary tools, skillsets and processes to think, feel and as a result behave differently to what you have already done before.

We like to look at your presenting problem like a mixed-up puzzle. Where in most cases, there may not be a definitive beginning or end and a pile of pieces that just do not make sense no matter how you look at it, right in the middle. Calm Therapy, works out what the missing pieces of the puzzle are, helps you make these connections together, to build a strong basis like an outline to the puzzle, so you can start finding ways to put it all together. To find your process of helping yourself not have the problem, to help you finish the puzzle so you can get on with living.

We use a range of modalities and tools to work out what will best help you. We do not fit the person to the therapy. In our eyes, you count, you matter, there is no one else like you on this planet, so we always ensure we give you the individual attention you deserve and design our approach to suit your individual needs.

What attitude will your Therapist bring to your session?

So to create a space for you to unpack your struggles, as your therapist, we will provide to you a strong sense of commitment, utmost dedication and positive regard for you as a person. We also enjoy being flexible and friendly so to help you feel comfortable and at ease. We take our sessions seriously but always have a touch of humour if needed, as they say laughter is the best medicine.

What is expected from me in my sessions?

To make these sessions work for you, it is expected that you will provide a sense of commitment towards effecting your own progress and change. We expect you will take what we do together seriously as we do, keeping to your scheduled sessions, participating in the techniques we provide, whilst having a laugh if necessary, and a cup of tea if you like.

You will be allocated small tasks/homework to complete in between sessions, in addition to being required to listen to the specifically designed Hypnosis recording delivered to you in clinic, in between your sessions each week.

Does your Therapist pretend to be something they are not?

Short answer is NO.

Your sessions are not about being assessed or labelled, we are not Psychologists or Psychiatrists, we are also not Doctors, so we do not make psychological assessments nor prescribe medication. What we do however, is give you real, practical, achievable tools for the everyday person, to effect real change in your life. To make the situation more tolerable because you in most circumstances, have the means to do things differently, once you know how.

And what’s most important if we determine we are not qualified and properly equipped to help you, we will openly let you know. We will refer you to someone who can. We always operate within our scope of experience and qualifications as this is how you treat people well, respectfully, ethically, considerately and always in good practice.

What makes my Calm Therapy therapist perhaps different?

They love to solve problems. We are all about being real, practical, compassionate, empathetic, funny and adaptable while working out how to get you to be the best person you can be, given the right resources and mindset to do things differently.

Ultimately, who doesn’t want to feel & think with more clarity and control so to respond to life instead or reacting. Our job is to equip you with the mindset to handle life’s uncertainties and curve balls better than you did before.

Also, our role is to provide you with a safe space to unpack your burdens in the aim to find new ways of adapting, handling and viewing your experiences more effectively.

And lastly, we are serious when we say we are about helping you discover the calm within. Because the world changes one person at a time and our goal is to start making positive change with that one person sitting in front of us in that moment, and that one person might just be you.

So if this feels, sounds or you just think it’s a right fit for you, please reach out and contact us so we can get started helping you discover the calm within.
